Barlay Campaign Team Honored as Co-champions of the 2016 Great American Cleanup

eMetro News Featured Rockdale

Each year, as part of the national Great American Cleanup initiative, Keep Conyers-Rockdale- Beautiful (KCRB) hosts volunteers from all over the county in a day spent cleaning parks, schools, subdivisions, roadways, and dumpsites. The event is held to encourage the citizens of our county to pick up garbage and other debris around the community; and also to teach our youth about the importance of litter prevention and recycling.

This year, Thua Barlay and 41 members of his campaign volunteers joined forces to participate in this countywide day of service by picking up trash around the Parker Road complex and Tennis Center. Recognition was given to the team for having the largest amount of volunteers (tied with Kingdom Builders Covenant Church). The co-champions will also receive a certificate from the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners.

“We are all especially proud of our participation, because the program is in line with the campaign’s efforts on community policing and code enforcement. We believe that a clean environment not only attracts businesses and residents, but also detracts the criminal element,” said Thua Barlay.

Barlay_Cleanup3According to Shelly Leonard, who coordinated the effort, “We were all pleased to be able to give back to the community while supporting the best candidate for Post 1. It is such a positive feeling being a part of that day.  Seeing the service this man has displayed is such an inspiration.”

After the cleanup was finished, volunteer groups met back up at Pine Log Park for fellowship and fun. Lunch was provided to the volunteers for all of their hard work.
