From Fr. Torrey

Dear Friends,

As most of us lament the end of summer, it is time to look toward the excitement of fall at St. Johnís. To save mailing costs this issue of the Chimes comes via email for those who have it. It is being sent as an attachment and also in the body of this email in the event that some folks have difficulty downloading it. The attachment will be much easier reading!

In this issue you will find information about the beginning of our fall schedule and the many events, both regular and special, that are quickly approaching. Please join fully in the life of our community as we launch into the fall.

Over the past few months I have been rotating the Eucharistic prayers from Enriching Our Worship (EOW) in with the regular prayers found in the prayer book. This book contains supplemental prayers for all the parts of the Eucharist. During the fall we will be rotating individual prayers from EOW onto our Sunday celebration as well. It will provide a little more linguistic variety in our community life of prayer.

In addition, I thought we would try renewing our Baptismal Vows once a month, rather than doing it every week during an entire season of the church year as we did during this past Eastertide. This will have us renewing our Baptismal Vows on a more regular basis, which is a helpful reminder of the centrality of these vows in our pilgrimage.

It will be an exciting fall at St. Johnís as we continue to grow together in the love of Christ.

                                    Faithfully,

Workshop Rotation Schedule

Instructor Sign-up

Our Church School is only as good as its instructors. Volunteers to instruct workshops are always needed! This can be a very exciting and rewarding experience!

Workshops are 4 Sundays each. The volunteer commitment is for 4 consecutive Sundays – plus at least one planning meeting. We need three volunteers for each rotation.

While we encourage creativity, the church school committee will provide both instructional materials and personal guidance as needed.

Please contact Young-Hee Derby at

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, are penitent for their sins, and are ready to affirm their confession of Jesus Christ (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860). It is expected that all adult members of this Church, after appropriate instructions, will have made a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and will have been confirmed or received by a Bishop of this Church or by a Bishop of a Church in communion with this Church (Canon 1, Section 4 of the Canons of the Diocese of Connecticut). If you would like to consider Confirmation, please contact Fr. Torrey for information about the process and requirements (623-3273).
