MEANDROUS THOUGHTS

THOUGHTS ON THE SPIRIT REALM

Here is an article I wrote for the magazine "Avalon Rising".

GHOSTS THEN AND NOW

"The greatest experience one can have is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science"
Albert Einstein 1879-1955

For untold centuries tales of ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night have conjured up images of everything from benevolent spirits to blood thirsting vampires.  Every culture has them and while there are many variations as to what the elusive phenomena is, the fact remains that there is "something" out there.  It is not uncommon for those who experience the unexplained to be stricken with fear although it wasn’t always the case.  In many cultures the spirits are still held sacred, revered and  worshiped.  The ancient Egyptians thought of the spirit body, or Ba, as a birdlike spirit with a human head. In Germany the astral body was called a doppelganger and a spirit a Gheist; in Norwegian Vardger; in Scottish Taslach and fetch in old English.  Offerings were left out for the dead and there were celebrations held in there honor.

During the early formation of the Catholic church there was an unwarranted shift in thinking. There was no room for Ghosts, fairies or anything that fell outside of the new Christian viewpoint.  Not only were the old ways cast out but any dealings with them were deemed "The Devils Work".   In light of the new religion it was not only evil to converse with the dead but you could get yourself hanged! It became increasingly clear that all experiences with the spirit world would either have to be hidden from the eyes of the church or brought to its attention as an opportunity for the local priests to perform exorcisms.  The early church would gladly cast out demons from your failing crops or exorcise your unruly child for a small fee.  This was one way in which  the catholic church could exploit the old religions while propagating their own.  The once gifted or blessed person who could access other realms was now feared as bewitched or possessed by Devils and Demons.

As a Paranormal Investigator I have had first hand experience with this phenomena and have seen how well it can take over a Family’s life.  To fear the unknown serves a necessary purpose yet with understanding one can once again learn to live at peace with the realm of spirit. The only thing that needs exorcism is the skewed perception that the Catholic religion continues to uphold.

While there are many who still believe in the dark and evil aspects of the ghostly plane, there has been a renewed interest and understanding that started in the 1850's with the birth of the spiritualist movement. It's basic tenets were that all people survive death as ghostly entities that evolve toward spiritual perfection.  Mediums and seances were in vogue,  and while there were numerous frauds it was confirmed that 40.000 spiritualists practiced in New York city alone. With the addition of neo-paganism and the new age movement, it would seem that the modern concepts of  spirit will prevail.  Channeling, divination, past life regression, as well as others, are replacing fear with understanding.   Despite centuries of oppression  our ethereal friends may still have a ghost of a chance.
