MEANDROUS THOUGHTS

THOUGHTS ON DREAMS

We all dream and then struggle to recapture these elusive subconscious events. Some Dream in vivid color others always in black and white. Why is this? Well there are many different theories as to why this is and at the present time Scientists and Psychologists are searching for the Answers. We know that as far back as the early 1900's there was a correlation found between the mind state of dreaming and REM (rapid eye movements). Researchers found that most people go through 4 stages of sleep ranging from light slumber to deep sleep and that after approximately 90 minutes after falling asleep this pattern is reversed. However this does not apply to ALL dreamers and so far as I have found there has been no research on why this is. In the 50's there were studies conducted in which electroencephalographs monitored the brain waves of sleeping volunteers and it was through these studies they concluded that MOST people dream in the REM state, well what about the rest of us? I have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to others and myself that I do NOT always dream during REM in fact one instance in particular defies the current theories all together.

One morning while asleep I was having a vivid dream, my son however was wide-awake and had answered a phone call. It was a friend of mine who wanted to chat about nothing in particular my son seeing that I was asleep thought it best not to wake me so he put the phone up to my ear. Suddenly my dream had changed the friend on the phone was speaking to me in my dream she said, "Are you dreaming. What are you seeing?" I proceeded in telling her everything that was happening and what it all looked like after doing this for some time I realized that not only was she in my dream but she was actually speaking through the phone that I consciously knew was at my ear. Was I talking in my sleep? Was it my subconscious or conscious mind involved in the conversation? How is it possible to be "aware" of your conscious surroundings while being in a subconscious state? These are some of the quandaries that contradict the current REM/dream theories.

Through my own investigating I have come across many who can (while sleeping) dream and be consciously aware that they are. Have you ever been dreaming and all of a sudden became aware that you were dreaming and could consciously change your dream environment at will? For example you're in a dream your standing atop a tall building your terrified of the height and the danger of slipping off the edge you find yourself on. Suddenly you realize this isn't real! This is a dream! You're no longer afraid! You're excited! Not only do you like being atop this tall building now, but you want to leap off of it! You consciously know that you can do whatever you like here in this subconscious realm of dreaming. It's very apparent to me that we are still very far from understanding the true nature of dreams and that all of the research to date remains inconclusive.
