The Mission of Spiritus Collective
Through concert performances and educational outreach projects, Spiritus Collective is committed to expanding the presence of historical brass instruments and their repertoire within the cultural community. The ensemble is interested in exposing a rarely heard repertoire and intends to provide audiences the opportunity to hear works that have not been heard since they were performed over three centuries ago. Spiritus Collective offers a unique opportunity to witness historical brass instruments in performance, by musicians who are committed to bringing to life music’s link to the past. Although period instrument ensembles have existed for many decades, ensembles containing historic brass instruments as key personnel are quite rare, especially in the United States. Because the ensemble performs music on period instruments, their performances alone serve an educational element, however Spiritus Collective can provide additional programs that supplement a traditional performance.
Members of Spiritus Collective are passionate about
introducing audiences to period instruments and have successfully incorporated
pre-concert lectures with performances. These lectures assist the audience
members by connecting these unusual instruments with the repertoire that they
are about to hear as well as the place of brass instruments in music and social
history. Sharing their experience and research is vital to Spiritus Collective
and the ensemble plans to participate in educational and informative projects
including all age groups on a regular basis, whether through pre-concert
lectures, presentations made within concerts, informal question and answer
sessions, demonstration-based lecture recitals or advanced level historical
performance practice oriented masterclasses or collaborative rehearsals.
