Vom Himmel Hoch: From the High Heavens
Instrumental Sonatas and Vocal Concerti from
17th Century Germany & Austria

Join us and immerse yourself in the sounds of period brass instruments, strings and voices performing rarely heard mid-17th century German and Austrian concerti and sonatas.  Hear the influence of composers such as Heinrich Schütz and H.I.F. Biber and witness a modern day premiere of a mass setting by Andreas Hammerschmidt.  This program features vocal concerti with instruments (including the glorious sounds of natural trumpets and a choir of sackbuts!) by Hammerschmidt and instrumental sonatas by Romanus Weichlein and is presented as part of the 1st Annual New York Early Music Celebration.  Don’t miss the debut of Spiritus Collective in New York City!

The Imperial Chapel:
Chamber Music from the Court of Leopold I

The Imperial Chapel explores the various tonal color options available in the sound palette of a 17th century composer with rarely performed repertoire including instrumental sonatas for natural trumpet and sackbuts by Antonio Bertali, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Pavel Vejvanovsky and Philipp Jacob Rittler as well as sacred vocal works by Flixi and Johann Joseph Fux.  Many pieces on this program are transcribed from the original manuscript found in the Liechtenstein Music Collection of 17th century music from Kromeriz, Bohemia and Spiritus Collective is committed to breathing life into these often neglected masterpieces.  Offering a rare glimpse into the typical virtuosity expected of brass players working in the court of Leopold I in the middle of the 17th century, the ensemble will also include acclaimed soprano soloist Jolle Greenleaf, period strings, dulcian (a predecessor to the bassoon) and continuo.
