[NI0054] In 1846 Abraham and his wife Catherine, his wife, conveyed a lot to ISaac Spitler of Page, Joseph Click and John Wine of Shenandoah County and John Kline of Rockingham County, trustees of the German Baptist Church (Bretheren). A building was erected on this lot in 1846, this being the date on the large stone step at the front door. THe old building still stands near the intersection of the Mill Creek and the Mud Pike roads. Mr. S. H. Modesitt, on whose land the old buildng stands says that it is located near the center of a 100 acre tract of land taken up by John Jacob Rothgeb on September 15, 1749; he had sons George and Peter from whom most if not all of the Rothgeb in Page County descend. His will is recorded in Staunton. The building stands in a grove of ancient oaks near the home of Mr. Modesitt who uses it for a tool shed.

[NI0057] Wayland's History of Shenandoah Co., Virginia, traces the Heydt-Hite family. Three sons of the old Baron of Elberfield fled Germany to Holland. They were the young Baron Jost & brothers Abraham and Joesph. Baron Jost Heydt left Holland with his family for America and settled in the Valley of virgnia. Ashort time later the four sons and one daughter of Abraham also the trip to America via Pennsylvania and on to join up with Baron Jost's family. The four sons names were Danile, John Andrew, & Abraham Heydt and their sister's name was Mary Magdalene Heydt. She first married a man named Crabil-Greybill who soon died. No children were born of this issue. She took for second husband John George Roadcap. This was his second marriage also. His first marriage was to Magdalena Piedler-Biedler. John George and MAry Magdalene had four children David, Barbara, and twins George & Christian. A few days after giving birth to the twins Mary Magdalen died. The widower John George Roadcap then married a third wife Barbara Bear who bore him eleven more children making the total 19 children for three wives. Mary Magdalene's four brothers and Baron Jost's family are responsible for lots of progeny in Virginia and elswhere, many of whom still live on farms up and down the Shenandoah valley.

Notes for G. E. Swadley:
Goodspeeds History of Unicoi County Tennessee

G.E. Swadley, farmer, was born in Washington County, February 27, 1838, the son of Henry and Mary Swadley, the former born in Pendleton County, W. Va., January 2, 1812, the son of George Swadley; Mary, consort of Henry Swadley, the daughter of Christian and Christinia Roadcap, was born in Rockbridge County, Va., in 1808. They are both of German origin. Their living children are G.E., Virginia W., John W., David C., Susan A. and Barbara A., while two sons and one daughter are deceased. Our subject was educated at Boon's Creek Seminary. After he was of age he taught a few years, and is at present county superintendent of Unicoi County, and is largeiy self-educated, and is a warm triend to education; as exemplified by his official acts, and is in favor of Federal aid and the prohibition amendment. He studied vocal music in 1861 at Singer's Glen, Rockingham County, Va., at which place he made great progress, and came out with distinguished honors, and was an efficient teacher in the divine art, for which he always expressed an enthusiastic love; but before our subject finished his education, he learned the boot and shoe trade, and was recognized as a good and honest workman, and worked at it when not engaged in teaching, up to April 1, 1869, when he married Susan C., a daughter of Perry and Elizabeth Hunter of Washington County, and of German and English origin. She was born December 10, 1844, in the latter county. Their children are Mary E., born July 26, 1872; Laura E. born November 23, 1874; Henry H., born May 24, 1877, and Robert A., born April 26, 1880. Stephens City, Va.,
Feburary 4,1900

Mr. I. W. Rothgeb [Isaac 1869-1947 son of Tobias, note by JR]
Dear Cousin:

Your letter of the 17th ult. was received a few days ago, having been forwarded from Luray, Page County to above address. I moved to this county (Fredrick) from page about 30 years ago, and have lived here ever since. I am 10 miles southwest of Winchester, our county seat, and 2½ miles west of Stephen City, formerly called Newtown.
My father's name was Isaac, my grandfather's George, who married Annie Spitler, and raised a family of eight children five sons and three daughters, three of the former (George Abram and John) having moved to the west and settled in Iroquois County, Ill., the first two remaining there, the latter having moved first to Mo., thence to Kansas and finally to Col., where he died some 8 or 10 years ago. He was the youngest of the family and the last to die, except Aunt Mary Rosenberger, who died only a few years ago at an advanced age. My father, one of the youngest of the family (there having lived on the river 4½ miles west of Luray, a short distance above the White House, or Mapanuttow, P.O.
My grandfather was a half brother to your grandfather, their father (our granfather) having had three wives and consequntly raised three sets of children. The name of his first wife was Biedler (if my memory is not at fault) by whom he has but two children, I think possibly three. The name of his second wife was Crabill, by whom he also had but few children, my grandfather being one of them. His third wife was a Miss Bear, by which marriage he had a largenumber of children, your grandfather, Michael, being of the number. I am not well acquanted with the history of this large family, resulting from the three marriages, excepting that of my own grandfather's family. A good many of the children from the last marriage moved west. Those remaining in Page, as far as I know, where Solomon, Daniel, Rauben, David, Mary, Annie, Terry and perhaps one or two others. Some of them however, were of the first marriage. Annie married a Strickler, and was I think, a full sister to your grandfather. She (Annie) had but one child, a daughter (Mary) who married Martin D. Coffman. They have not long been dead. Mrs. C. having died recently, and was pretty thoroughly acquanted with the history of all. She has a son living, H. M., whose P.O. address is Leaksville, Page County, who could perhaps give you more satisfactory information than I can.
The old stock in PAge are all gone. uncle Reuben has three sons living; Sam Frank and Martin, the latter being a Dunkard preacher. His P.O. is Luray, I think or Massanutter, as he lives on MillC reek, midway between those two places. Perhaps he could tell you more of interest to you than I can. Daniel R. also has two sons living in Page, Solomon D. and John W., the address of the first being Leakville, that of latter, Luray.
Yours truly,
(signed) A. B. Rothgeb

P.S. My mother died 5th of last month, aged 89 years and 2 months. Have one brother living in Page on home place and one in Iroquois Co., Ill. - a merchant. Iam farming and growing fruit. Iam living about 50 miles north of Luray.
Would be pleased to hear from you.
The catalogue you mentioned failed to reach me. Who is the Jack Johnson you spoke of about how old is he? I am 61 years old, lost an arm in Rebel Army. Have three sons, the oldest G.L., living in Chicago, Ill. The youngest, Chas., in Brooklyn, N.Y. and H.D. who is a physician in East Lynn, Ill.

Per letter from Betty J. Cooper 9/28/98 he died from a kick from a horse, source listed is The Gospel Visitor Vol x, #9, Sep 1860, a Church of the Brethern periodical

1850 Census has him listed as a farmer near Dry River at Fulks Run, Rockingham co. & iliterate

In 1812 Emanuel Roadcap was overseer of the Dry River road from Fulks Run to the Pendleton County line on the mountain. In 1840 he again held that responsibilty, while in 1847 it was given to Jacob Roadcap (probably Emanuel's son)

A farmer, Emanuel owned $2500 worth of real estate in the 1850 census. From the Agricultural Census of the same year, we can determine what products Emanuel and his family raised on the farm. That year he owned 200 acres of improved land and 200 acres of unimproved land, for a total cash value of $2040. His farm implements were valued at $100, which appears to be about average for the Brocks Gap area farmers. Six horses, 5 milk cows, 9 head of cattle, 11 sheep, 6 horses, and 20 hogs comprised the farm's livestock, for an estimated value of $600. That year Emanuel anticipated harvesting 200 bushels of wheat, 200 of Indian corn, 40 of oats, 20 punds of wool, 1 bushel of peas & beans, 5 bushels of potatoes, and 3 bushels of sweet potatoes. Those milk cows would produce 300 punds of butter during the year, and hay produced on the farm would total 6 tons. Other produces was 2 pounds of hops, 30 pounds of maple sugar, 5 gallons of molasses, 20 punds of beeswax and honey, for a value of home-made manufactoring of $15, and a value of animals slaughtered of $40.

Based on variety of farm products, Emanuel and his family were fairly self-sufficient. The value of their farm was a little above average Brock's Gap family.

[In the 1789 Rockingham County land tax, Peter Roadcap, probably Emanuels's father, held 199 acres in the Elkton area. In 1802 he held 100 acres in Brock's Gap, and in 1819 100 acres on Slate Run. In the 1793 Rockingham tithables, George Rodacp was listed for the first time (Emanuel's grandfather?) in the Brock's Gap area, but he owned no property at that time.]

Emanuel died about August 12, 1860. The administrator of his estate was George Fulk; securites were Adam H. Fulk and Silas Devers. Four local men were appointed to appraise the estate: George Fawley, Adam Ritchie, Philip Baker, and Jacob Fawley.

By the time the 1860 Rockingham Census was taken, Emanuel must have already died. Elizabeth Roadcap, age 67, was head of the household. Their 2 yougest children, Elizabeth age 29, and Jacob age 25 were living at home. Both the children could read and write, and Jacob owned real estate in his own name ($400) by that time.

Elizabeth continued to live with her son Jacob, even after his marriage to Jane _____. In 1870 Census, Jacob was 34 years old, his wife Jane was 26, and their children were Ida Roadcap age 8 and Emma Roadcap age 6. Elizabeth, age 74 was living with them, and her occupation was RETIRED.

Rockingham Register, Harrisonburg, VA. Friday, May 18, 1860: "Sudden and
Violet Death of An Old Citizen" One of our correspondents has furnished us
with the particulars of the sudden and violent death of an old citizen of
Rockingham County, a resident of Brock's Gap.--Mr. Emanual Roadcap, living
in the Gap, left his home on Saturday last, as the family supposed, to
salt some cattle. Not returning, he was sought for and found lying dead
in one of the fields, near a colt, which was also dead. It is supposed
that he attempted to turn the cold, which was sick or crippled, into
different field, when it fell, and in its struggles kicked Mr. Roadcap to
death. He was much bruised, and his clothing was torn as though done by
the hoofs of the colt. Mr. Roadcap was in the 73rd year of his age. He
leaves a widow and twelve children and many grand-children to lament his
death.

Thanks for all your help

(Jacob Roadcap later father of Madison bought land from Peter J., son of Peter Sr.: 1788-95 as owning 199a; 1797-100 a; 1798- 199a 1800 -30 a; 1802 -100 a; 1802 30 a & 1 lot; 1804 -100 a ; 1805 -100 a; 1806 - 100 a1808 - 100 a;1811 - 100a; 1812 -100 a, Slate Run - $8,000; 1813 - 100 a. (Deed Book D, B, 10 - page 154 -Rockingham Court House). Peter Sr. who was assumed deceased by March 12, 1831 willed Land to Son Joseph Roadcap. Mary (wife of Peter Sr.) lived on this land in Brock's Gap. Brock's Gap is in Western Rockingham County. (From Administration Bonds 1818-1864, Rockingham County VA., October 4, 1824). Joseph Roadcap was deceased by March 12, 1831.

Letter, Wanda Diehl Lester, 416 S. Laurel Ave., Waynesboro, VA., believes Peter Roadcap . Sr's son Peter Jr. is our Roadcap family tie-in to the Switzerland Rothgeb family line. "This is the way George and I believe the line goes , can't prove it, being no wills for Peter Roadcap Sr. and Peter, J. Peter Jr. sold his land to Jacob Roadcap (100 acres in Brock's Gap) in April 15, 1839. We have no proof, but figuring dates, Jacob could very well be the son of Peter Roadcap, Jr". Peter Roadcap , Jr. inherited land from his father. peter Roadcap Sr. Peter Roadcap, Sr who was deceased on or before March 12,1831. Peter, Sr's wife Mary lived on this land in Brock's Gap, Rockingham Co. VA, 21miles from the court house (from Deed Book 10, page 154, Peter Roadcap, Sr - father of Pter, J from Administration Bonds 1818 to 1864 Rockingham Co. VA. October 10, 1824 - Peter Roadcap Descendant Administrator- Samuel Coats, Bondsman - John Christman. $200.00). their children were Ann, whose spouse was Isaac Reedy, and we might assume the tie to a possible son, Jacob R. Roadcap.
