The Desk of Christopher
James Beppo |
Look for "A Fine Bend in the River : The Diary of Ezra Small." by Christopher James Beppo in fine book stores summer 2005. A book signing by C.J. Beppo and Henry Small will be held at The Smallville Book-Nook. Date to be announced.
| Walk into the downtown office of The Smallville Ledger and you just might bump into Jim Bradlee, George Talmer, or even the pretty face of Kathy Romita. Up on the second floor tucked away in a back office you’ll find a desk with a workstation and old-fashioned typewriter, an I-Pod, and a few empty candy wrappers on it. I'm talking about the desk of the elusive journalist we've all come to know as Christopher James Beppo. |
| Mr. Beppo is quite an enigma and has become very popular in the public eye ever since he released his first story about Smallville's founding father, Ezra Small. But the truth is that he’s been writing for some time. It's not easy to catch up to this middle aged hotshot reporter. In fact, his colleagues at The Ledger admitted they can't keep up with his pace, but they do all love to work with him.. |
| "Always off to do more research, spending late hours working on his book [“A Fine Bend in the River: The Diary of Ezra Small” is due out this summer], keeping up with his regular assignments here at the paper, that's Chris," remarked Kathy Romita. "He'll be in here in the late hours working on a story. Always on the go, then back to meet his deadline." "Chris is a great guy. We're a lot alike," said Chloe Sullivan over at The Torch. Chloe is the acting editor of Smallville High School's newspaper, The Torch, and has worked often with him. "The Ledger is the official sponsor of The Torch and Chris is my contact over there. Although I've had an internship at The Daily Planet, Chris is still my advisor when it comes to The Torch and all things weird in this leafy little hamlet." "He's really just a regular guy. I bump into him at The Talon picking up his morning 'Red-Eye'. Sometimes we exchange notes on stories we're working on. We even swap tunes from recent downloads," Ms. Sullivan told me. Well, maybe he’s just a regular guy compared to a young ambitious journalist like her, but he’s more than regular to those who have come to enjoy his writing. “People just don't know he's right there along side of them because they're so caught up with his work; particularly the Ezra Small stuff. It's not like he's a recluse or anything. You probably bump into him down town and don’t realize who he is because you don’t know the face that goes with the name. And he wants it that way. He's very private when it comes to his personal life. He's not the kind of person who is used to all that attention. He shuns the limelight.” “Last summer my cousin Lois and I went to San Diego one weekend and we dragged Chris along. It was really nice to see all the people there. Lois and I enjoyed talking to people while Chris spent most of his time catering to Lois’ every wish and carrying her things around. Every once and a while, he’d disappear. He’d manage to find something interesting and off he went. But then he’d be back with a bottle of water or something for Lois. You know? It always seems to happen that way. Just when I find a nice cute guy I start to like, my cousin shows up and they end up going nuts over her. Hello! What’s with you guys anyway.” Christopher Beppo graduated with honors top of his college class and went on right away to earn his Masters' degree. Originally from back east, he came to settle in Smallville by choice. While working on some other things in Metropolis he found Smallville and fell in love with it. As soon as he discovered the Ledger, he submitted a couple stories of his own and was offered a job right on the spot. By this time, he had already done some work out of college and had even been offered a position at The Daily Planet. But the atmosphere of Smallville seemed to have an intoxicating affect on him because he chose to make it his new home. It seems as if it was just yesterday that Chris came home to visit his parents; something he does fairly often. We talked about how things were going for him in Smallville. He didn't seem concerned at all. "Things will work out [referring to the sale of The Ledger]. They always do. I have so many projects going and keeping me busy. In that sense I'm not too concerned. But, writing for The Smallville Ledger is one of my most favorite things to do. I enjoy it so much," Chris said. He was truly amazed that people had taken such an interest in his work, especially the Ezra Small articles. In fact, I thought he was quite humble about the whole thing. His parents were amazed too, but for other reasons. They were very proud of their son and that was obvious. "Don't you realize how many people have been following your stories?" I said to him. "There are people all over the internet posting things about Ezra Small and Christopher James Beppo. You can Google and find people are posting on message boards about it. Your work has gotten outside of Smallville; people all over are interested in it." "I wasn't trying to make a name for myself. I got the original assignment at the Ledger to do this story on the town's founding father. That led into another assignment to do a series of articles because of the public interest. As I did more research, I found that there was more to Ezra than meets the eye and I wanted to present that to the readers," he responded. "I'm really pretty much a private person. I always have been. I take plenty of time to get out and have fun, but I do like my quiet time to myself too. Why? You don't think I'll end up with someone stalking me or something, do you?" Chris' witty humor was kicking in. But there's also a more serious side to this eclectic single guy. [O.K. His mother made me promise to write the 'single' part!]. He is well versed in classic literature and history, as well as modern literature and current events. And this twenty-first century renaissance man knows science to science fiction. Then there's his music. Yes, I said music. Chris liked to play musical instruments since he was a small boy. DaVinci truly would have been proud of him. So, that’s a bit about Christopher James Beppo from my perspective, and the opinions of a few others who know him. Is he just a ‘regular guy’ or not? I’ll leave that up to you to decide. Until next issue… - Rich ‘Ritch’ Huber |
