RACE REVIEW 1999

Race Up Date, 9/19/99:

Well the season is over.  Missed the last race at Challenger.   Had to clean up the yard after hurricane "Floyd".  I wish to thank every one who helped out this past season even though it was a disappointing one.  My plans for next year are up in the air. My car is for sale.  If I can sell it I'm either going to get a newer midget or see what my options are.

Race Up Date 8/29/99:

Track: Waterford Speed Bowl, 33 quality cars trying to qualify for 24 spots on the 1/3 mile asphalt oval:

It was a successfully night on one hand, but a disappointment on the other.  Six qualified out of each of three heats and the consi. Well I finished 7th in the heat, and held onto a 6th in the consi so I just made the main.  I started last and finished 19th. The good news was the motor ran COOL and GOOD.  The Bad news was I finished 19th.  I lost the brakes a couple of laps into the main.  To do better on asphalt I would need to work on the chassis/set up more, and that means spend more money.

Next I will change the car back to the DIRT set up and go to Lincoln on the 11 of September.

Race Up Date, 8/22/99:

I should have stayed on the plan from the beginning of the year and stayed on good ol DIRT.  The reason being, the asphalt race at Riverside got rained out, and ARDC ran the DIRT at Lincoln.

So I'm all ready for Waterford next week.

Race Up Date, 8/15/99:

The following is my tentative schedule for the rest of the season.  August 21, Riverside Park, August 28, Waterford Speedbowl, (Possibility of Oswego September 4), September 5, Flemington, NJ. September 11 Lincoln, PA, and September 18, Challenger Speedway, some where in far western PA.

Race Up Date, 8-1-99:

It was a HOT night of racing at Waterford Speed Bowl.  95 degrees at 6 PM.  We were an also ran, the driver not being used to asphalt, and old front tires and a borrowed set of rears.  29 cars signed in.  Of course we had to start last in our heat because we were running as an "Outlaw" with NEMA.  We finished 7th in our heat.  We started 22nd in the feature which took a long time to run.  We made it about half way through only gaining a couple of positions.  And then the engine got to HOT so I parked it.  About 7 or 8 other cars had an over heating problem.   And then some even ran out of fuel.

This weeks plan is to cut up the hood and make an air duct to force air into the cooler and add another cooler.  Then we will go out to Seekonk, MA. and race next Saturday on the asphalt.

Then if all goes well, it will be back to the dirt on the 21 at Lincoln.

Race Up Date 7-25-99:

Finally got the motor back today and started to put it into the car.   The plan is to start it on Wednesday, test at Waterford Thursday, and race at Waterford Saturday night.  This is if every thing goes good.

Race Up Date 6-25-99:

The NEW engine case has finally arrived.  Phil's Machine Service is putting it together.  It should be race ready in a week or so.  Then I'll go do some testing and get ready for the next DIRT race at Grandview on July 20.

Race Up Date 6-2-99:

Nothing new to report.  Just waiting for a new case which I've been told would take 4 to 6 weeks.  Once we get the case, it will be a couple of days to put it together and then we will be off to the races again.

Race Up Date 5-3-99:

The TRACK:  Silver Springs:

Not a good up date.  While running 2nd in our heat, the motor came a part.  As of Monday night I know the case is broken and the crank is in 2 pieces.  Phil has the motor and we should know by Wednesday what needs to be replaced.  Stay tuned as we try to get ready for Williams Grove, I hope.

Race Up Date 4-24-99:

A long night at Port Royal.  COLD and long.  Didn't leave the track until mid night.  We were running pretty good.   We were holding our own in 8th place when the horse power started going away.  Slipped back a couple of spots and on the White flag lap the motor started to skip.  And that was that.

Drove straight home, 330 miles and 6 1/2 hours later I got a few hours sleep.  Then woke up and started to work on the car. After washing it, I checked the engine and found that I torched a head.  Got a call into Phil to try to get it fixed as soon as we can.   If we can make repairs in time, we should be OK for this coming Saturday at Silver Springs.

Race Up Date 4-18-99:

Lincoln Speedway: It started out like we might get rained out but we got the show in after a brief shower.  I went by myself but had a real crew at the track.  Thanks to Larry and Andy and the others that helped out.   We started 4th in the heat and wound up finishing 2nd.  To bad the heat had to end.  The longer it went the faster we got.  The feature was a different story.  We started 4th once again and were holding our own around 7th most of the feature.  The car had a real bad push so we were just holding on.  Then with a few laps to go a yellow came out and at that same time there was some ones broken header on the track, and guess what I didn't see it until it was to late. It ripped a hole in the right rear. I darted into the pits and Larry and the crew changed the tire and we got back out before the green was dropped.  We were at the back with a few laps to go but we made a little charge and got up to 13th and that is where we finished.  I got home around noon on Sunday so there was no chance of making it to Waterford.

I got the car all cleaned up and torn a part and preparing for next Saturday at Port Royal.  See you there.

Race Up Date 4-8-99:

I did some testing at Waterford Speed bowl on 4-3-99 to see how the car would run on asphalt.  Running on 10 year old front tires and borrowed 1 year old rear tires we turned laps of 15 seconds which is mighty quick considering all the factors.

My plan is to race at Lincoln on the 17 and if we make out OK and drive all night and get home by 6 or 7 AM, I'll make a couple of phone calls and see if we can run the feature at Waterford.  NEMA is scheduled for Waterford the 17 for qualifying and 18 for the feature.  If I get the OK for starting the feature, I’ll change the car from the DIRT set up over to the ASPHALT set up and go see how we make out there.

Then after that, I'll change the car back for DIRT for the Port Royal show the following Saturday.

DIRT is still my primary goal for this year, but Waterford has 5 midget shows and is only 45 minutes from home, where as central Pennsylvania is 6 1/2 hours away.
