Hooking up for Todd's first launch in Whiskey Hotel. Artsy version.
Ridge flying near Wurtsboro in the fall!

Wurtsboro Gliderport - home base, and the oldest gliderport in the U.S.!
The pilots: (wish there were pictures of everyone and their sailplanes - but
for now...)

Hans, on the left, flies a Tiger-Moth, a wonderful open bi-plane.
He's discussing today's weather with Bob L.
Harry and Carl-Heinz. Both bought new Discus in 1999!
Who did it? Alan, on the left, Carl-Heinz in the middle, or Bob
on the right.
John House flies his DG-300, MY. But today, he's fitting in a
quick (but usually long) bike ride while he waits for the cumulus to
build.

ordered a new plane in '99.

From the left, Mom Pattist, Marty (who bought a new Discus!), Jerry

The Operation:
Assembly area with all the trailers lined up.
Once the ships are assembled, everyone waits for the best conditions -
and then - it's the "race of the lemmings" as we call it, as all the
pilots rush to get airborne at the same time!
The "grid", with all the sailplanes lined up for takeoff. On
busy days, there are usually two towplanes available to keep the line
moving quickly!
Another beautiful sunset at Wurtsboro.
While there are several tow planes, this one is everyone's favorite!
One of the operations training craft - a Schweizer 2-33.
Another 2-33! On good days, at least 4 will be flying at one
time!
There is a club on the field for new pilots who transition out of the
trainers, and then can rent this Schweizer 1-23. There is also
a 2-person Lark available for club memebers.

You know it's a fun airport when one of the co-owners flies in early
in the morning in his Citabria from a neighboring airport! What a
way to commute!
George also owns this beautiful Waco! There are some fabulous
bi-planes which live at this field! Taildraggers and sailplanes make
good companions!

Other Soaring Pics:

Todd and WH next on the takeoff line!

Even a cake decorated with a
glider! Karen loves the challenge of cooking gourmet meals in
the motorhome!

The Local Area Hikes and Scenery:
There are many gorgeous waterfalls in the Catskills - within easy
driving on a non-flying afternoon!
The Pattist Jeep, named Denny, traveling along next to the stream
which feeds the Neversink reservoir.
Another one of the many waterfalls. There are also great
wineries in the area to tour, and then there's shopping - never hard to
fill an afternoon not flying!
A hike up Slide Mountain, the highest point in the Catskills.

Looking out on the Ashokan reservoir from the top of Slide Mountain.
We've always loved the name of the town "Peekamoose" - but we've never
seen the moose...
A version of wild raspberry plants growing along the roadsides.
In the spring, the mountain laurals are astoundingly abundant and
luxurious.

A campsite in Black Moshannon State
Forest, not far from the gliderport. They provided a firepit, covered picnic tables,
and great views out onto the lake!
Todd, or "Prometheus
the Fire Bringer" doing his thing! Got a little more challenging in the
rain, but Todd still kept a fire going to cook the lunch!
Karen
grilling sausages. One of our favorite picnic lunches - the English Bangers and
Mash!

Todd
& Karen in the 4-Runner, exploring the ridge roads in the pouring rain.

A great vista from a walk along a bog.

One of the stumps seen of the bog walk.
If we missed our garden at home, the
flowering trees in PA were beautiful!
This is supposed to be one of the best
views in the state of PA! As we took this picture, a bolt of lightening hit nearby,
and we hurried off the "scenic" ridge top!
Now we know we're in Amish country!
