Planting layout for water plants in the new pond!

A plan is drawn for the surrounding beds of the ponds, and a plant list compiled.
This planting was done in the fall - the best time for a wide selection of perennials!
The fish produce ammonia as they breath through their gills.  Bacteria break this down into nitrites, and more bacteria break nitrites into nitrates, which is fertilizer for the plants.  A hydroponically planted pond is the most efficient ecosystem!

All plants that would be in contact with water in the new pond were bare rooted, washed and treated for bacteria, and then planted in a fibrous matting rather than soil.
There were two areas in this pond where grass comes right into the water.  The transition is actually pebbles, as grass hates to grow underwater for any length of time.  Here, sedges are used in baskets to soften the outlines.
The baskets are created from plastic fencing material and molded into containers with cable ties - a method we pioneered!  When lined with landscape fabric and planted with soil-less potting media, they can be made to many custom sizes and shapes!
