Orzell Family
My name is John R Orzell from Hebron, CT. My Orzell family originally settled in the greater Rutland, VT area. My ancestors came to the United States, like millions of other immigrants, to find a better life for themselves and their families. The first known members of my family to settle in the United States were Jan and Jadwiga Orzel. An excerpt from "Polish Cemetery Inscriptions Vermont" compiled by Jonathan D. Shea and published by The Polish Genealogy Society of Connecticut and Northeast INC., states "In 1883 two Polish families settled permanently in the town (West Rutland, VT): Wojciech and Antonina Stompor and Jan and Jadwiga Orzel". This is further verified in an "A Half-Century Polish Imprint on West Rutland, VT 1890-1939" written by William Wolkovich-Valkavicus. The article also declares that the estimated date of Polish settlement in West Rutland, VT could be off by 10 years. Putting the first inhabitant in West Rutland, VT about 1893. This would be more relevant with the documents I have gathered.
Jan Orzel's naturalization papers dated September 1900, his year of naturalization, denotes that he was living in West Rutland, VT in 1895. He went to the courthouse in Rutland, VT with his friend William Kasikiewicz and filed his intentions to naturalize. This document is the initial item that confirmed when he arrived in the US He and his wife were registered in the 1900 census as Jan and Julia (Jadwiga) Rodo (Orzel) and stated the he immigrated in the year of 1895. These are the earliest documented sources that I have confirming the start of the Orzell Family in the United States.
After establishing himself in the community he began to bring other members of the family to the country. Jan sponsored some of his family in order for them to immigrate to the United States.
The first to come over was Franciszek Orzel in 1903. His passenger ship manifest listed his uncle Jan Orzel of West Rutland as the person who was going live with after arriving. As of now I don't have much information about him except that he probably went back to Poland. I am not sure how he is related to the family. Any help with his status would greatly be appreciated.
Another nephew sponsored by Jan was Wojciech (Albert) Lorenz Orzel, my grandfathers older brother. He came to the US in 1907 and settled in West Rutland. He soon married Maryanna Klima on 18 Jan 1908 and began to raise a family. He worked as a laborer in the quarries.
The next and most important family member to immigrate was my grandfather Jan Wincent Orzell. At the age of seventeen my grandfather left his mother Sophia and sailed from the port in Bremen, Germany to the United States. He arrived in the Port of NY 19 Mar 1910 on the SS Oldenburg. Like many of the Polish immigrants, he worked at the marble quarries in West Rutland. He married Antonina Dydo 24 Aug. 1917; one curious note here was he used Eagle as his surname on the marriage certificate.
