Tuning the guitar to open D can be useful for fingerstyle playing. You often have a full six-string chord available with fingers left over for the melody. You can also play chord fragments up the fingerboard while still having open bass notes.

The downside? You're pretty much limited to the key of D, and even some of the chords in D are a problem.
