COPING WITH WINTER By John Yates
I don’t recall just the year of our extreme cold, it was the same year the Congregational Church burnt, but it was in the late forties or the first year or so in the fifties. I do know though, that it became quite cold for a long period of time. For about two weeks it never reached above zero.
Now this kind of cold plays havoc with anything that is left out of doors or stays outside for any period of time. We did not have a garage for our car and my Father had to have the car to get to his work every morning because his place of business was in Marquette. This created sort of a problem, the engine in the car would not even turn over on its own with battery, due to the thickening of the oil and the jellying of transmission grease. So every morning, Dad had Earl Pettit, who worked for Huebsch Chevy, come by with wrecker and give Dad a push, turning over the engine so it would start.
The streets were still covered with some snow and ice, causing the wheels to slide until they hit spots where the concrete was bare and then the wheels would start revolving. The engine would start and Dad would leave the engine run, while he went into the Post Office for the mail and any other stops he might need to make. At this period of time, leaving your car running was not a risk at having it stolen.
I remember one morning going with him after getting the engine started and not being able to change gears until we were almost to Marquette which was over a mile and then only getting out of low and into second gear. You peered out though a small hole in the frosted windshield to see. Not real safe by to days standards but everyone in those days were having the same problem, so you looked out for one another.
They were fortunate enough, to be able to start their cars, when it was time to leave for the day, by leaving them out where the sun would shine on them all day, helping keep the engine oil and grease warm. Dutch Weir, Charlie Peck and Dad were there.
We did not have a thermometer at home, so we [my Mother] used the windows on the third floor of the hospital building, which frosted over and by the whiteness of the frost, Mother would have an idea of how cold it was. Just how she could be so close I never knew but she would be within five or ten degrees of the actual temperature.
