He was a spry man with a beautiful head of white hair and a full white beard, always kept neatly trimmed. He carried a cane in his later years and I don't know if he needed it to steady himself or if it made him appear more dapper! He smoked a pipe and took his tobacco from a large blue tin humidor trimmed in gold, and I think the brand was Grainger. (maybe sometimes, Prince Albert) When he became interested or excited over something, he was totally immersed in a cloud of smoke. I particularly remember during World War II with him standing in front of our radio listening to the horror stories coming out of Germany and Italy, and across Europe, and him having a real pipe attack. Guess that beat biting the nails.

Grandpa married Mary Hester and had two boys, one of which died young, and Mary passed away March 5, 1887. Five months later on August 17, 1887, he married our Grandmother Hettie Moody. (didn't wait too long to find a second Mrs. R., did he?) They had 12 children of which twins and a daughter died in infancy. My mother Pearl was the oldest daughter, and third child, of 4 boys and 8 girls. Don't you know that was a lively household!

Grandpa died August 16, 1955, on my parents' anniversary. He was the oldest member of the family at that time. When my mother, Pearl, turned 94, she was so thrilled that she was outliving "Papa" and all the rest, and she lived to be a few months short of 103, and she then had the honor of being the oldest member in Hettie and Grundy's family, all of them having passed away years before.

Grandpa always enjoyed his birthday. We usually had a party or a family reunion which we all enjoyed as it brought us all together. He loved to receive gifts and being fawned over. He was such a great family man, loved all his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and don't know how far down the line they went while he was alive.

We're so indebted to Katie for her genealogy research, as I enjoyed so much checking all these dates to make this story. I had no idea when these events happened, just knew when his birthday month was. Great old fellow, and look what a heritage he's left for us all!!

Grandaughter Barbara Shelton Yates tells the following story: I loved going to Mamaw & Papaw Russell's (Marvin & Lena), not only to be with them, but because Grandpa (Charles Grundy) spoiled me as bad as they did. We use to walk down the lane to the mailbox, and have great talks. He never hurried me if there was a wildflower blooming and I wanted to stop and pick it. He would sit me on his lap after we got back to the house and he would take out his pocket knife and cut the top and bottom off a pecan, paper-shell I'm sure, and then cut down the sides and pull me out a whole pecan. I always thought that was the greatest trick I ever saw, of course I got to eat them. When I was around 4, I wanted to stay the week at the farm, my Mother said she would ask Mamaw. I didn't know it was ask and that it would be okay, so I hid under Grandpa Charles Grundy's bed. They searched for me and had began to think I had wandered down to the tank and fell in. Grandpa came in his room and saw my feet under his bed, he told them I was okay and if they wouldn't spank me he would tell them where I was. I can't believe to this day, but they let me stay, even after that prank. As long as I can remember Charles Grundy lived at the farm with Mamaw & Papaw, I think he moved in with them after Grandma Hettie died.
