For a year or two I tried to log the signs of seasonal change. See The Signs of the Seasons,my pseudoscientific survey of the indicators of the changing seasons. When did it get warm in 2000? (Spring 1999, Fall/Winter 1999)

(picture of) New Orleans streetcarI've been off-and-on in love with New Orleans ever since college. It will never the same post-Katrina. (Here are some places where you can help.) Here are some great NO links:

Gambit's Best of New Orleans
Check out the Bourbo-cam. On a fast connection (T1) it's almost full motion. Almost like hanging out. (on the street corner?) And... check out the Fess cam!! (Tipitina's various locations)
Jazz Fest
A great list of New Orleans music links!
How to speak Yat (like a native or to understand the natives)
Offbeat Magazine. A great printed and online magazine about LA and NO music.
Tipitina's. This uptown night club is Mecca for fans of New Orleans music and spiritual home of the late Professor Longhair.

I used to move down there every couple of years in the hope of finding work, enjoying the climate, the relaxed way of life, etc, but it never worked out. The last time I tried it I wrote some letters back to my friends. Here they are for your enjoyment. Nothing like waking up to see a canoe floating in the swimming pool out front... or falling bullets on New Years Eve or... well you get the idea.

Equipment used: Microtek V6upl color scanner, Adobe PhotoDeluxe for most of the color pics, AppleScanner (B&W), Faxman (scan to print software, max resolution 300 dpi), GraphicConvertor to clean up and crop images and convert to JPEG, GIFmation demo to get Gertrude to dance, Netscape Communicator 4.72 (Composer) to do WYSIWYG HTML, BBEdit Lite for raw code, Fetch for FTP. All this made easier with my 500mhz Powerbook. Updated on a 1.67 ghz Powerbook DL.
