Section 9.3    Equations and Absolute Value

(Examples provided by Prentice Hall)

Part I: Equations and Absolute Value

Solve each absolute value equation.

Example 1   Solve | x – 5 | = 2.
x – 5 = 2   or   x – 5 = –2
x = 7   or   x =
3

Example 2 Solve | 3x – 3 | = 12.
3x – 3 = 12   or   3x – 3 = –12
3x = 15   or   3x = –9
x = 5   or   x = –
3

Example 3 Solve | 2x – 5 | = –7.
There are no solutions, since the absolute value is always nonnegative.

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
