Section 6.3 Trinomial Squares

(Examples provided by Prentice Hall)

Part I: Recognizing Trinomial Squares

Which of the following are trinomial squares?

Example 1 x2 + 2x + 1

Yes,

x2 + 2x(1) + 12

Example 2 x2 + 3xy + y2

No,

the middle term is not 2xy.

Example 3 81x2 + 36xy + 4y2

Yes,

(9x)2 + 2(9x)(2y) + (2y)2

Part II: Factoring Trinomial Squares

Factor.

Example 1 x2 + 10x + 25

= x2 + 2 • x • 5 + 52

 = (x + 5)2

Example 2 y2 – 8y + 16

= y2 – 2 • y • 4 + 42

= (y – 4)2

Example 3 4x2 + 12x + 9

= (2x)2 + 2 • 2x • 3 + 32

= (2x + 3)2

Example 4 2x2 + 12x + 18

= 2(x2 + 6x + 9)

= 2(x + 3)2

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
