Section 5.9  Multiplication of Monomials and Binomials

Vocabulary

  • FOIL

  • first terms

  • outside terms

  • inside terms

  • last terms

Remember

  • When multiplying a polynomial by a monomial use the Distributive Property.

  • Each term in the polynomial must be multiplied by the monomial.

Worked out examples for Part I: Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial

Multiply.

Example 1   3a(6b + 7)

= (3a)(6b) + (3a)7

= 18ab + 21a

Example 2 2x(3x2 + x + 4)

= (2x)(3x2) + (2x)x + (2x)4

= 6x3 + 2x2 + 8x

Worked out examples for Part II: Multiplying Two Binomials

Multiply.

Example 1   (x – 4)(x + 2)

= x2 + 2x – 4x – 8

= x2 – 2x – 8

Example 2 (3x + 2)(x + 5)

= 3x2 + 15x + 2x + 10

= 3x2 + 17x + 10

Example 3 (4ab + 3)(2a2b + 1)

= (4ab)( 2a2b) + (4ab)1 + 3( 2a2b) + 3 • 1

= 8a3b2 + 4ab + 6a2b + 3

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
