Section 5.8  Subtraction of Polynomials

Vocabulary

Two polynomials are additive inverses of each other if their sum is 0.

Remember

  • The opposite of a polynomial is found by changing the sign of each term of the polynomial

  • If you choose to use the vertical form for adding or subtracting polynomial, align like terms and leave a "hole" in the polynomial that does not have a term like one in the other polynomials being added or subtracted. (See example 5, page 237)

  • "subtract 5 from 12" means 12 - 5

  • To subtract polynomials, add the opposite of the polynomial that is being subtracted to the other polynomial.

Extra help for Section 5.8

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
