Section 3.5:  More on Solving Equations

Vocabulary

  • solution set

  • null set or empty set

  • the set of all real numbers (as a solution to an equation)

Given the equation:  -7y + 2 = -3y - 30

You must get the variable on one side only.

You have a choice.  You may add 7y to each side or add 3y to each side.

The following is one possible solution.

Given:                                      -7y + 2 = -3y - 30

Add 3y to each side.        -7y + 2 + 3y = -3y - 30 + 3y

Simplify.                                   -4y + 2 = -30

Subtract 2 from each side.  -4y + 2 - 2 = -30 -2

Simplify.                                         -4y = -32

Divide each side by -4.         (-4y)/(-4) = (-32)/(-4)

Simplify.                                             y = 8

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
