Section 2.8:  Inverse of a Sum and Simplifying

The Property of  - 1

For any rational number a,

-1(a) =  - a

(Negative one times "a" is the additive inverse of a.)

The Inverse of a Sum Property

For any rational numbers a and b,

-(a + b) = - a + (-b)

Remember:

  • The sum of two negative numbers is negative.

  • The product of two negative numbers is positive.

  • Write out each step.

  • Accuracy is important.

  • It only takes one incorrect sign to obtain an incorrect answer.

  • Parentheses ( ) and brackets [ ] and { } are called grouping symbols.   A fraction bar is also a grouping symbol. Perform operations within the numerator and the denominator before simplifying further.

  • A number directly preceding a variable indicates multiplication, and when the variable is replaced with a number you must indicate the multiplication in some other way.  This is  usually best accomplished with parentheses.  For example:

Evaluate    -2x - 5       for x = 6

-2(6) - 5

-12 - 5

-17

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
