Section 2.6:  Division of Rational Numbers

Vocabulary

  • quotient

  • multiplicative inverse

  • reciprocal

Rules for Dividing Real Numbers

Dividing Nonzero Real Numbers

1.  The quotient of two real numbers with the same sign is positive.

2.  The quotient of two real numbers with unlike signs is negative.

Property

Multiplicative Inverse Property

For each nonzero number  a, there is exactly on number  1/a  such that

a(1/a) = 1  and  (1/a)a = 1.

The number  1/a  is called the reciprocal or multiplicative inverse of  a.

Dividing Numbers

For all rational numbers a and b (b ¹ 0)

a/b = a * 1/b

Take class notes.

Before starting your homework, rework the examples that are illustrated in this section of your textbook and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Then do your homework.

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
