Section 1.2  The Commutative and Identity Properties

  • Commutative property of Addition

  • Commutative Property of Multiplication

  • Equivalent expressions

  • Additive identity

  • Multiplicative identity

Commutative Properties

Addition
For any numbers a and b, a + b = b + a .

(We can change the order when adding without affecting the sum.)

Multiplication
For any numbers a and b, a b = b a .

(We can change the order when multiplying without affecting the product.)

Identity Properties

Addition
For any number a, a + 0 = a and 0 + a = 0

(Adding a 0 to any number gives that number.)

Multiplication
For any number a, 1* a = a and a * 1 = a.

( Multiplying a number by 1 gives that number)

Take class notes.

Rework the examples that are illustrated in this section and the examples that I demonstrated in class.

Do your homework

Write down questions (examples or concept that you do not understand).......then.............. Ask these questions in class.
