Vocabulary Negation (p. 264) A negation of a statement has the opposite meaning of the original statement. Inverse (p. 264) The inverse of the conditional "if p, then q" is the conditional "if not p, then not q." Contrapositive (p. 264) The contrapositive of the conditional "if p, then q" is the conditional "if not q, then not p." A conditional and its contrapositive always have the same truth value. Equivalent statements (p. 265) Equivalent statements are statements with the same truth value. Indirect reasoning (p. 265) Indirect reasoning is a type of reasoning in which all possibilities are considered and then all but one are proved false. The remaining possibility must be true. Indirect proof (p.265) A proof is a convincing argument that uses deductive reasoning. A proof can be written in many forms. An indirect proof involves the use of indirect reasoning. |
