Vocabulary Midsegment of a triangle (p. 243) The midsegment of a triangle is the segment that joins the midpoints of two sides of the triangle. Coordinate proof (p. 244) A proof is a convincing argument that uses deductive reasoning. A proof can be written in many forms. In a coordinate proof, a figure is drawn on a coordinate plane and the formulas for slope, midpoint, and distance are used to prove properties of the figure.
Theorem 5-1 Triangle Midsegment Theorem If a segment joins the midpoints of two sides of a triangle, then the segment is parallel to the third side, and the length of the segment is half the length of the third side.
