The above left picture of Babe Ruth and Joe Budwitz was taken around 1945-1946. Joe was one of the founders of Meriden Little League and for more than 50 years he served on various Meriden athletic teams and programs, as scorer, statistician, publicist and public address announcer, earning the unofficial designation as "Meriden Sport's Historian." He also served on the Meriden Little League board of directors for many years.

One of Joe's baseball hero's was Babe Ruth. Budwitz recalls when a Packard car Babe Ruth was driving broke down near the culvert just over the town line in Wallingford. Babe's car was taken to John J. Scanlon's garage in Meriden. While the car was being repaired, Ruth walked around downtown Meriden, where he was spotted by many people. News of his presence circulated by word of mouth and a crowd followed him around the streets. A photograph of Scanlon and Ruth standing behind Ruth's car, for many years hung in Scanlon's Packard agency. The picture above, of Joe and the Babe, was believed to be taken during Ruth's unexpected visit.

Above right, is a picture of Connie Mack and Joe Budwitz, taken in 1945. Budwitz made a personal pilgrimage to Philadelphia accompanied by Ray Frederick's, former Meriden police photographer, to felicitate Connie Mack on his fifty years as team manager and his approaching 83rd birthday. Mack received him in his private office in the Shibe Park Stadium, and showed him all over the premises from the dressing rooms to the press box atop the grandstand.
