Platt, Maloney Split City Meet
By Tim Kolehmainen

BOYS: Maloney 82, Platt 68 GIRLS: Platt 85, Maloney 61
MERIDEN - The annual Maloney-Platt track and field meet always brings out the best in ath-letes from both schools. After all, bragging rights in the city are up for grabs.
But this year's event had even more of a playoff atmosphere than usual. After being postponed twice earlier this spring by foul weather, the Spartans and Pan-thers finally got together Thurs-day night at Platt. Normally in late May, activity on the school's track is limited to practices in preparation for the upcoming CIAC state meets. Instead, the two schools wrote the latest chapter in their long rivalry.
"These Platt-Maloney meets al-ways have a little extra pressure," said Maloney freshman Duchaun Reeves. "(But) it feels like it's separated all by itself purposefully." Reeves seemed up to the challenge, as he cap-tured the 110-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 18.06 seconds. Along with a double-victory from teammate Edward Ubaike, the pair helped the Spartans boys claim an 82-68 victory.
In the other half of the meet, the Platt girls turned the tables on visiting Maloney, winning 85- 61 behind a quartet of first-place finishes from jun-ior Aubree Annino.
"They just have too many horses for us," said Maloney head girls' coach Bob Dingwell. Last year, Maloney won both ends of the meet, with the boys winning 78-72 and the girls 90-51. Maloney boys have now won the city championship the last three years.
For the boys, Ubaike completed a Maloney sweep of the hurdles, winning the 300 in 43.9 sec-onds. He took the high jump by clearing 5-6 on his first attempt. Platt's Ismael Amaro also cleared 5-6, but had two fouls.
The Spartans also received first-place finishes from Vin Bucchieri in the 1,600 (5:23), Paul Ta-radesna in the 400 (51.05), Steven Bucchieri in the 3,200 (11:30), Hector Marte in the javelin (121-6), John Kovach in the shot put (38-3), Craig Johnson in the long jump (18-2) and Benjamin Lyons in the pole vault.
Maloney's boys overcame a near-record setting performance from Platt's Kevin Downing. The Panthers super sophomore came in just shy of a school record time in the 200, part of his sweep of the sprinting events. Downing won the 100 (11.3), 200 (22.99) and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x100 relay (44.9).
He'll compete in all three events at the CIAC Class MM championships Thursday at New Britain, part of 15 Panthers to earn a spot at states. His coach, Bob Angiletta, also wouldn't be sur-prised it he's on the medal stand at the State Open the following Tuesday. Downing has those goals, but he's trying to keep it in focus.
"You just have to go in strong and have a clear mind of what you want to do," said Downing.
Chris Hyde earned first in the 800 (2:14.58), Nate Prescott won the discus (121-6) and Amaro cap-tured the triple jump (39-6) for the Panthers. Platt's boys also grabbed the 4x400 (3:36.9) and 4x800 (9:29) relays.
On the girls side, Annino was the key to victory for Platt, as she won the 100-meter dash (13.3), 200 (27.65) and the long jump (15-11). The junior also teamed with Chelsea Garlock, Alyssa Papotto and Denise Rivera to claim the 4x100 relay (53.5). Pa-potto, Garlock, Brittni Saddler and Carlie Man-chester won the 4x400 (4:25.20).
"Our sprinting is definitely our strength," said Annino. Platt won every sprinting event save the 400.
Sophomore teammate Amanda Prescott cap-tured the triple jump (34-6 ½) and the high jump (5-2). Garlock claimed the 300 hurdles (51.04) and Rivera took the javelin (89-2). Platt's other wins came from Julia Alvarez in the 1,600 (6:25.39) and Jess Stanley in the shot put (28- 8).
Maloney's girls picked up a double victory from freshman Kendra Marshall in the 400 (1:04.27) and 800 (2:31.06). Gabrielle Willette won the dis-cus (86-6), Kasey Pregler took the 3200 (14:14.07) and fresh-man Shanika Wimber returned from a layoff to win the 100 hurdles (18.05).
‡ Observers of the CCC South track and field season may have noticed the absence of the Maloney boys and girls teams at the division champi-onships earlier this week. Nei-ther team was in attendance - neither the boys at Newington on Tuesday nor the girls at Bristol Eastern the previous day.
While the boys' absence was inadvertent due to a busing er-ror, the girls team actively boy-cotted the event according to head coach Bob Dingwell.
"I refused to go when they started scoring (teams) be-cause some teams didn't have a chance," said Dingwell, who explained that prior to last sea-son, the girls' event was only scored on an individual basis. The boys have always kept a team score.
Dingwell opposed the rule and talked to his team about skipping the event. They agreed with his stance and the meet was run without Maloney. "I have a young team and I didn't want them feeling like they (couldn't compete)," said Dingwell.
