Platt, Maloney split City Meet

MERIDEN - In theory, Tuesday's cross
country championships at Hubbard Park
were to decide who was the big fish in
the small pond of Meriden: Platt, Maloney
or Wilcox Tech. Instead, it muddied the
waters even more.
The Panthers and Spartans spent the
afternoon divvying up title shares.
Every time one claimed individual victory,
the other responded with team victory.
In the end, both took home a share. In the
end, Wilcox was left in dry dock.
Carissa Palmer chalked one up for Maloney
when she claimed the individual girls' title.
She finished the 3.1-mile course in 23:42 to
easily outdistance runner-up Kari Peck of
Platt (24:53). However, Peck and the Panthers
did sweep both Maloney (22-33) and Wilcox Tech
(17-41) in the team tally by taking five places
in the top 10. Following Peck were Corie Pol
(3rd, 26:17), Christina Ward (4th, 26:31), Jess
Stanley (6th, 27:39) and Alexis Jakiela
(9th, 29:49). Maloney earned a split by beating
the Indians 23-33. Also scoring for the Spartans
were Ann Davis (5th, 27:25), Lauren Rosadini
(11th, 30:59), Melissa Garbe (14th, 31:51) and
Lindsey Hartenstein (15th, 32:45). Wilcox Tech had
two top-10 runners in Ann Marie Fearney
(7th, 29:14) and Samarra Ward (8th,29:40).
The Indians also got scoring from Leslie Rivera
(13th, 31:35), Melissa Rosa (16th, 32:53) and
Raven Mc Millan (18th, 33:58).
On the boys' side, Maloney claimed the City team
championship for the fourth year in a row. Platt's
Derek Destefano rolled to an individual victory in
18:05, nearly 30 seconds ahead of Maloney's
Vinny Bucchieri (18:34). But Bucchieri's squad
swept the team portion, topping Platt (24-35) and
Wilcox Tech (15-50), by taking places 4 through
7 and 6 positions out of the top 10.
Alex Jenkin was fourth (18:54), Mike Weiss
fifth (19:42), Peter Mills sixth (19:45) and Kyle
Buonocore seventh (20:09). Maloney boy's recorder
their first winning record in six years finishing
with a 6-3 overall record and a 2-3 record in the
CCC South. Platt took out the Indians, 17-44, led
by third place finishers Manny Rivera (18:38. Also
scoring for the Panthers were Matt Holmes
(8th, 20:15), Danny Roesler (10th, 20:31) and
Darryl Johnson (15th, 22:41). Jon Pagan
(13th, 22:30), Sean Gosselin (14th, 22:32), Tom
Petrocelli (22nd, 24:11), Terrence Vereen
(23rd, 24:41) and Joe Rivera (29th, 28:06) scored
for Wilcox Tech, which was without its top runner,
David Kingsland.
