Spartans sweep Panthers: Maloney's depth key to win over rival Platt
By Bill Ennever, Record-Journal correspondent 5-18-2005

MERIDEN - Using their depth, the boys and girls Maloney track teams topped Platt in an intra-city dual meet Wednesday afternoon on the east side, with the boys winning 78-72 and the girls 90-51.
For the boys, the Spartans (4-6) took home first place in just eightevents while the Panthers (1-7) won 10.
Oscar Perez was the only double winner for Maloney, taking the 300-meter hurdles (43.1 seconds) and the triple jump (41 feet 7 inches). Ryan Terrenzi led a Maloney sweep in the 1,600 (5:10), followed by (2) Steve Bucchieri (5:19) and (3) Vin Bucchieri (5:23).
"In a three mile race," Terrenzi said, comparing outdoor track to his passion for cross country, "it's all pacing, but in this one (the mile) you really have to go faster, so it feels like a sprint compared to the long-distance race."
Platt's Kevin Downing won both the 100 (10.7) and 200 (22.7) dashes, edging Maloney's Chris Bacote by a tenth of a second in both. In the 100, the freshman Downing broke a 32-year-old school record by a single tenth of a second. In 1972, John Hardrick set the previous mark in the Maloney-Platt track meet at Platt, according to Panther coach Bob Angiletta.
"I knew where it was," Downing said of the mark, "but I never planned on beating it this year."
"When he first started running, he wouldn't use a block," Angiletta said, noting that Downing first used a set of starting blocks three weeks ago. "And he is still unsure of it. I've told him the faster you get out of the blocks, the faster you're going to go." For the girls, Maloney (4-6) was paced by a trio of 1-2-3 sweeps highlighted by triple winner Caitlin Manchester. Manchester dominated the distance races, winning the 800 (2:47), 1,600 (6:04) and 3,200 (14:34). Lisa Bradley set the pace in the 400 (1:05). Carol Evans did the same in the 300 hurdles (55.4). Evans also won the 100 hurdles (18.8). Amanda Lurvey led the pack of Spartans in the javelin (115-8½).
"I grab dandelions and put them in the field and aim for them," said Lurvey, a senior. "Honestly, that's what I do. I need a target, and with a target I always do better."
All the first places for Platt (1-9) came from sophomore Aubree Annino and freshman Amanda Prescott. Annino cruised in the 100 (13.0) and 200 (27.7) along with the long jump (16-2½). Prescott won both the triple jump (32-4) and high jump (4-6).
"We know that we have potential in the future years," Panther coach Melissa Torrence said of her young crop. "Hopefully, it will get more kids involved. Even if our team record isn't that impressive, we can still say we had kids who shined in the state meets."
With the regular season wrapped up, both the boys and girls squads will next race at the CCC South championship meet Tuesday at Platt.
