Platt, Maloney split city meet

MERIDEN - Dreary Tuesday wasn't a perfect day for cross
country, and Platt's Julia Alcarez admitted, "the cold
made you feel as if you had lead instead of muscles."
Still, Alcarez found warmth in beating cross-city rival
Maloney 25-30 at Hubbard Park. Also in the Girls Race
Platt beat Wilcox Tech 22-33 and Maloney beat Wilcox
Tech 25-31.
The senior covered the 3.1-mile course in 23:37 to win
the girls' race.
"This is what you're being told to look forward to ever
since your freshman year," Alcarez said. "Everything
builds up to Maloney. You can lose to every other team,
but as long as you beat Maloney it's been a good season.
"I just really, really wanted to beat Maloney," she
continued. "I wanted it more than anything. It doesn't
matter how tired you are. You know what you want and
you're not going to stop until you get it."
Platt and Maloney split Tuesday, as the Spartans boys
won 21-38 over Platt, and 19-44 over Wilcox Tech. Platt
beat Wilcox Tech 23-32.
Panthers coach Jim McGetrick said he noticed his girls
"were more geared up for (Tuesday's) meet than the
other ones" because of the rivalry. The Platt girls
improved to 1-5 with the win, while Maloney fell to
2-7 and Wilcox Tech fell to 0-9.
"We just picked up a girl, a freshmen, to make this
a legitimate meet," McGetrick said. "We've been
forfeiting our team meets for the girls. I couldn't
be any more excited."
On the boys' side, Maloney sophomore Vinny Bucchieri
finished first with a time of 18:19. Like Alcarez,
he said he was buoyed by the rivalry.
"My plan was just to run as hard as I can and as fast
as I can," Bucchieri said. "I've been preparing all
year for this race and this is exactly what I wanted
to do. It's a city rivalry. It's the best race of
the year to me to show the whole city what I can do.
I'm happy with my time. It's my best time this year
for this course. I've been thinking about this race
since the season started."
It was the final dual meet of the season for the
Maloney boys, 3-6. Platt remained winless at 0-6
and Wilcox ended its season at 2-9.
"They've really worked hard all season, so it's good
to see them have a good meet at the end," Maloney
coach Mark Britton said. "Vinny's been excellent.
He's consistently our strongest runner. He has a
great work ethic and he takes it seriously. He comes
out here and puts out his best effort every race,
which is exactly what you want out of an athlete."
Wilcox didn't have enough athletes Tuesday, as each
team was one runner short of the mandatory five.
The Indians boys dropped to 2-6, while the girls
slipped to 2-5.
"You tell them to try for their personal best,"
Wilcox girls coach Sue Perry said. "Cross country
is a team sport, but it's also individual. They're
improving their times over the season."
Dave Kingsland had the best performance for Wilcox.
He finished second in the boys' race with at 18:56.
"That's my best time of the year," said Kingsland,
whose previous best was 19:26. "It's good to do it
in this race because you know the kids from the
other Meriden schools."
