Birding Organizations in the State of Connecticut

Connecticut Ornithological Association
IMHO, the best. As of March 2000, they finally have a web site! Publishes quarterly bulletin AND quarterly journal, The Connecticut Warbler. Sponsors annual conference and a number of field trips. Keeps records, sponsors Avian Record Committee, and maintains Conn. Rare Bird Alert. Contact c/o Birdcraft Museum, 314 Unquowa Rd., Fairfield.

Connecticut Audubon Society
Contact c/o Conn. Audubon Nature Center on Burr St. in Fairfield. Maintains nature centers and sanctuaries around the state including the Fairfield site, Milford Point, Glastonbury's Holland Brook Nature Center, and 13 others. See CAS Web Site for a complete listing.

Darien Audubon Society
Publishes nice map. Web site has excellent photos. Box 3313, Darien CT 06820.


Litchfield Hills Audubon Society
Focuses on area around White Memorial. Good trips and newsletter. Also known for winter "owl prowl." Box 861, Litchfield CT 06759. Maintains the Boyd Sanctuary in Litchfield and the Kalmia Sanctuary in Harwinton.

New Haven Bird Club
IMHO the best local bird club. Monthly meetings. Good field trips and good newsletter for reports. Usually well organized.

Greenwich Audubon Society
Good field trips. Contact Audubon Center of Greenwich. Known for Family Nature Walks on Sunday afternoons.

Hartford Audubon Society
A very good local bird club with wide-ranging field trips.

Western Connecticut Bird Club
Some good trips. Flanders Nature Center may have some info.

Potapaug Audubon Society
Essex, lower Conn. River valley, and nearby shoreline. Sponsors trips. P.O. Box 591, Old Lyme, CT 06371.

Menunkatuck Audubon Society
New Haven to Madison shoreline area. Sponsors spring birdathon and numerous field trips.

Mattabeseck Audubon Society, Cromwell
Some good field trips, especially Conn. River Valley. Some bird trips via canoe. Click here for an alternate link.

The Nature Conservancy, Connecticut Chapter
Above link is nice graphic page about Conservancy lands in the state and local chapters . The Nature Conservancy sponsors the Piping Plover/Least Tern Recovery Project.

Waterbury Naturalist Club


Natchaug Ornithological Society, Storrs


Connecticut Green Mountain Club
Sponsors some bird hikes, especially in spring and in forested areas.

Other Field Trip Sponsors
The Audubon Shop in Madison, the Fat Robin Wild Bird and Nature Shop in Hamden, and the Wild Bird Center in Milford all sponsor local bird trips. The Audubon Shop has frequent trips to nearby Hammonasset Beach State Park. Fat Robin has spring trips to nearby East Rock Park and fall trips to Lighthouse Point Park. Both shops sponsor Bald Eagle viewing trips in winter. The Avon Wild Bird Center sponsors trips to the Farmington Valley area and various workshops through the Town of Avon Recreation Department.
