Great Backyard Bird Count
Feb. 15-18, 2002. Fifth annual "backyard" winter count at time when most birds are settled. Great for monitoring populations throughout North America. Sponsored by Cornell Ornithological Laboratory, National Audubon Society, and Wild Birds Unlimited. School curriculum material available. Some focus on Internet reporting. Contact Sally Coyne for more information.

Fall Hawk Migration
Reporting is made to the
Hawk Migration Association of North America. This link has reports from our region. See Conn. Birding Calendar for information on seasonal Hawk Watches. See also The Raptor Center web site for some information.

Shorebird Conservation Project
Sponsored by the
Manomet Bird Observatory, this is an ongoing project to monitor shorebird habitat and populations. Census takers for specific areas needed to record population at least three times per migration are needed. All other reports of shorebirds in the USA welcomed. Click to Manomet Bird Observatory Web Site for more details.

North America Migration Count
Purpose of NAMC is to record migrations of all birds through North America. Generally in Connecticut a day or weekend in May is chosen for reports. Click for Sample for Migration Count. The New England NAMC coordinator is Mike Resch. 1999's NAMC day is May 8. See notice for compiler information for official announcement and calendar for some specific events related to this.
If you are like me, you will probably be birding the 2nd Saturday in May anyway (assuming the weather is not miserable). So why not tally your results for that day and send them to the appropriate coordinator listed below? It is quite painless, there are no fees, and you can feel good about contributing to a count that is dedicated to preserving our migrants.
Contact one of the county coordinators below to reserve your territory and obtain a tally sheet.

The Big Sit
A record of the birds sighted from a single position in a 24-hour period. Usually done in Connecticut in October. See
Conn. Birding Calendar when in season for details. John Himmelman is the Connecticut coordinator. Connecticut has one of the best records for this unique count. (You really don't have to travel far for good birding in Connecticut!)
