Great Backyard Bird Count
Feb. 15-18, 2002. Fifth annual "backyard" winter count at time when most birds are settled. Great for monitoring populations throughout North America. Sponsored by Cornell Ornithological Laboratory, National Audubon Society, and Wild Birds Unlimited. School curriculum material available. Some focus on Internet reporting. Duck Off 2000( a.k.a. Winter Waterfowl Waddle)
As part of an effort to fund more ornithological research in Connecticut, COA has come up with another excuse
to go birding.... The Winter Waterfowl Waddle is a day's trip along our coastline to tick off wintering ducks
plus.
All proceeds will go to the COA Research Fund.
Date: February 26, 2000 (Midnight to midnight, no jacklighting! NO TAPES).
Team: Minimum 2 people, 4 max (not including leader) Team members must bird together.
Entry Fee: $10 per team.
Winning: A point system will determine winning team. Points are awarded in the following manner:
30 for most waterfowl species seen.
25 for new CT state Bird seen (new for CT).
20 for any species on CT review list. This includes non-waterfowl species.
10 points for the following species; Red-necked Grebe, Northern Gannet, Least Bittern, Little Blue Heron,
Tricolored Heron, Cattle Egret, Green Heron, Yellow-crowned N-Heron, Glossy Ibis, Tundra Swan, G W-fronted
Goose, Snow Goose, Northern Shoveler, Eur. Wigeon, Redhead, Common Eider, Barrows Goldeneye, King Rail, Sora,
Common Moorhen.
5 Points for the following species; Red-t Loon, Common Loon, Pied-billed Grebe, Horned Grebe, both Cormorants,
Am Bittern, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, B-c Night-Heron, Mute Swan, Brant, Canada Goose, Wood
Duck, G-w Teal, Black Duck, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Blue-w Teal, Gadwall, Am Wigeon, Canvasback, R-necked
Duck, both Scaups, Oldsquaw, each Scoter sp, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, each Merganser sp, Ruddy Duck,
Clapper Rail, Virginia Rail, Am. Coot.
1 for every other species seen not listed above.
Point penalties: -50 for missing Mallard. 25 for missing Mute Swan.
Each species seen must be seen (or heard) by at least two team members. No species can be counted if a member
of the team disagrees with the identification.
NOTE!! Teams are encouraged to seek sponsors. Funds collected will be used by COA for CT research. Sponsors are not required and team members can contribute to this end if they feel inclined.
