Regarding your question on pop music bands, you're right there are not many pop bands. But there are a few individual singers (writer + composer too) who are quite popular though. One is Suman Chatterjee.

He is more popular among the more educated lot. His popularity is mainly among the younger people but he appeals to other age groups too. He is greatly influenced by Bob Dylan and has spent quite a few years in the US and Germany (in fact his wife is German).

Another singer is Anjan Dutta who is pretty good too. But his voice and lyrics are not as good as Suman's but his music is good.

Another popular singer-writer-composer is Nachiketa. He is extremely popular among the college students and unemployed guys probably because he is anti-establishment. But many don't like him 'cause he uses a lot of slang in his lyrics. His tunes are quite good though.

A brand of music which I like a lot is bengali folk music and the first name which comes to my mind is Swapan Basu. He is a regular at all annual North American Bengali Conferences. This year it was held in SFO and he stole the show. Utpalendu Chowdhury is another good folk singer.

There are few bands based in Cal and they play western pop music. Shiva & Crosswinds are the best among them.
