Holi (Dol-jatra)

Holi festival in March is the festival of colors in honor of Krishna. It's a wild, fun time when people throw colored water and colored powder at each other. Everyone ends up green and magenta. Wear old clothes on that day or stay off the street.

 

 

Durga Puja

Durga Puja is the most important festival in Calcutta, celebrating the slaying of the demon by the goddess Durga, thus restoring peace. It's in September or October. Each neighborhood vies to set up the most elaborate display of Durga statues and on the last day all the images are pushed into the Hooghly River.

Kali Puja

Kali Puja is celebrated with firecrackers and more than 2,000 alters erected throughout the city. It's observed in October or November; the festival is known as Diwali in other parts of India.

 

 

 

Saravasti Puja

Saravasti Puja is in mid-February. Saravasti is the goddess of learning. Children are given books during this festival.
