Six families who gathered together to offer mutual support and exchange information around mental health issues laid the foundation of InterCommunity in 1976. To help in the recovery process, InterCommunity provides treatment, rehabilitation and
support through experienced and dedicated staff, including psychiatrists, social workers, nurses,
counselors, rehabilitation specialists and paraprofessionals.
InterCommunity serves adults living with a severe or persistent psychiatric disorder, including co-occurring
addiction disorders, and especially those who lack resources for needed mental health services.
Approximately 1200 people are served annually; the majority live with serious and prolonged mental illness
or are at risk of hospitalization, as measured by the standards of the State of Connecticut Department of
Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), and are poor, homeless, or at risk of homelessness.
As a lead agency, InterCommunity functions as a single point of entry into the mental health system,
accountable for the provision of wrap-around services to meet each person's individual treatment needs.
InterCommunity serves as a gatekeeper to the state-operated psychiatric hospital, Cedarcrest for residents
of the six-town area.
