Minna Kleeberg
Poetess

[Minna Kleeberg monument]

Minna Kleeberg's monument in the Mishkan Israel cemetery

Minna Kleeberg (1841-1879) was the wife of Rabbi Dr. Levi Kleeberg of Congregation Mishkan Israel. She was a poetess of some destinction and had her work published in many German-language belletristic publications both in this country and in Europe. There was also a book of her poems published in Louisville, Kentucky in 1877 entitled Gedichte. Most of her poems speak out against the plight of women, and reflect her yearning for their liberation.

Several years after her death, this allegorical monument was erected in her memory, paid for by contributions received from members of Mishkan Israel and from friends around the country.

Photograph taken by Werner S. Hirsch in 1988 and was published in
Vol. V of
Jews in New Haven.
