The Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol was organized in 1930 and the congregation purchased the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, on the corner of George and Dwight Streets in New Haven, to use as their synagogue. Their first rabbi was Rabbi Meir Rapoport, the well-known Bialystoker Magid. With the population shift away from the downtown area, the congregation merged with the Westville Synagogue in 1962. The building was sold to the Redevelopment Agency and was demolished in 1964.
