We love our dogs and we feed them well, but not always what is good for them. Not all dog foods are created equal and a dog eating poor food will not only look it, he may act it as well. Just as feeding a child a poor diet can effect his concentration and attitude, feeding our pups poor food can make a good dog seem hyperactive or listless.
Research dog food brands and ask you vet for recommendations. Some brands are more expensive, but in the long run are well worth the expenditure. The better dog foods have more nutrition and calories than the cheap stuff, so you will feed less; the protein is more digestible so your dog will defecate less (good news for those house-breaking pups!); the dog's coat will be better so he will shed less; the dog will stay healthier so you will pay less at the vet's. It's a "win-win" situation! I have switched my dogs to an all natural, raw diet (See BARF) and the change in them has been wonderful! They are healthier and happier than ever before!
And what about treats? Treats are fine, just make sure that the treats aren't becoming the bulk of the diet! That is easier for the larger dogs, but to a 5 pound Chihuahua, a dog biscuit can be a big chunk of the daily calories. For the smaller dogs, break the treat up into small pieces--the dog will be just as excited getting the treat and you can breathe easy that you haven't just spoiled his dinner! You can also try healthy veggie treats if your dog will eat them. Carrots are great for teething puppies and they are good for them too!
