Before you think this is the miracle cure for all that ails your pet, it is important to do your research. Switching to a natural bones and raw food diet is a lifestyle change and should not be undertaken lightly. There are disadvantages to the diet, but these can be overcome if you have a firm commitment to do what is right for your pet.
| Convenience: The main reason that the commercial pet food industry took hold is that feeding commercial kibble and canned food is the ultimate in convenience. You pour the stuff in the bowl and you are done! Not so with a BARF diet. It will take some work on your part, especially initially. You will have to find a supplier for the bones and meat. You will have to grind or pulp vegetables. You will have to research supplements. Once you get going, it is really very easy, but it will never be as easy as pouring from a bag. But then again, your dog is worth it, right? | |
| Mess: There is no way around it, a BARF diet is more messy than a kibble diet. You will be grinding veggies, you will be chopping chicken. If you are squeamish, you will have a problem! | |
| Travel: Traveling with your pet is more difficult. Many BARFers pack their food in zip-loc bags and store them in a cooler. Obviously, kibble is much easier here. Also, if you leave your pet home in a kennel or with a pet sitter, you will need to find one who does not mind feeding raw food and who will take the time to feed properly. | |
| Time: You will spend more time buying and preparing your pets dinner. You will spend time doing reading and learning how to best feed. |
