The following is an update from Charlie Hunter regarding the Snowden Environmental Trust:
Dear Dar-listers,
Although I no longer subscribe to the Dar-list, I do occasionally head over to the incredibly-up-to-date Dar-web page and check the archives. Good to see the list still so lively, and hello to all... As you may know, the SET (Snowden Environmental Trust) is alive and well, and we recently received another $415 worth of checks from Scott Green (greener@connix.com) the wonderful volunteer who makes tapes of Dar's two early cassettes for fans who make a donation to the SET. To date, Scott has collected $14,444 for the SET.
In the last twelve months, SET has given out $5,950 to:
- Barred-owl habitat research project in the Black Mountains of North Carolina
- The Carolina Kids Conservancy (school programs teaching kids about the natural world)
- Napa County Land Trust (wildlife habitat preservation)
- Yolo Land Trust (farmland preservation)
- Broad Brook Coalition (in Northampton, MA - they manage Fitzgerald Lake, a wildlife refuge. They had the opportunity to buy nine acres which otherwise would be developed - we provided the money to purchase two acres)
- Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences.
- Sustainable Harvest International
- Mt. Grace Land Trust (MA)
In conjunction with the Richard Shindell list, the SET is going to sponsor several Adopt-A-Raptor programs, and I think its about time we supported a couple of Middle-America land trusts... probably in Iowa, don't you think?
For those of you concerned with what percentage of our proceeds go to administrative costs, 100% of all proceeds have gone to environmental causes, although this year I may take $10 to cover some stamps I bought.
Our goal was to build the account to about $20,000, and then distribute anything over that to environmental organizations, primarily ones that protect wildlife habitat or preserve land. So far, we've done just that, thanks to Scott Green and all of you.
If you'd like to make a donation to SET, send a check to
