UPDATED 7/7/97 : The Mortal Earth Fund has changed to the SNOWDEN ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST. Dar Williams full name is Dorothy Snowden Williams. The only thing that has changed is the name of the fund. The trust's/fund's purpose still remains as established in the Mortal Earth Fund. scott - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Original posts about the Mortal Earth Fund... Here's a repost of Charlie Hunter's (Dar's manager) announcement on June 1st, 1996: ================ The MORTAL EARTH fund is up and running (which means we finally opened the bank account). Here's what it is and how it works. Although the earth is not mortal, the name sounds good, and gives a sense of what we want to present. Dar wants to try to build a small, endowed fund to make charitable contributions to worthy environmental groups. We'd like to build the principal up, so that the fund itself is self-sustaining, and contributions are made from the interest. Dar has started it off by putting $800 in a bank account. Dar will not make any money from the fund; it is solely for charity. I'll post periodic reports about what we've managed to sock away and who and what we're contributing to. Every time you make a tape of a Dar show, or trade a tape between other Dar-listers or anybody else, Dar is (technically) being deprived of income from her music. We know, however, that depriving Dar of income is not any fan's intent. So, sort of like share-ware, we ask that each time you trade a tape of Dar's music, you send a contribution of $10 or so to The Mortal Earth Fund. Scott can answer for himself regarding his donation minimum, but I want to respond to this part. The MORTAL EARTH FUND doesn't have any minimum donation, and it doesn't specify *anything* about bootlegs because it is not a "bootleg fund." It's an environmental support fund for Dar's listeners and anyone else who wants to save the earth. Monies collected will be periodically donated to appropriate causes. You don't have to make or buy a Dar tape to contribute! The only connection with taping is that Dar has suggested that listeners who do make tapes send a donation to the MEF instead of directly to Greenpeace or the Sierra Club, as she used to ask. This lets her distribute the monies equitably and also keep track of what's going on out there. :)
