The Vintage Dance Society is dedicated to the reconstruction and preservation of the music and dances of the Victorian and Ragtime eras. The society offers periodic workshops (as an opportunity to learn the dances of these eras) and recreates period social events throughout the year (as an opportunity to step back in time and enjoy these dances in the setting they originated in). The society also offers monthly informal dances as a chance to meet other vintage dance enthusiasts, to learn new dances, and to hone one's dance skills. Typical events include Civil War era, 1890s, turn-of-the-century, and Ragtime era balls; Ragtime Teas; Speakeasy's, informal potluck dinner dances; and both weeknight and weekend workshops. Our most recent event was a Victorian (1890s) Christmas ball. Held at Keeney Memorial Hall in Wethersfield, Connecticut; with music by the New River Dance Orchestra, it was a night to remember. With candles in the window and Christmas lights hung all around, one could imagine that they had stepped through a window in time. It was an opportunity to take your favorite dance partner in your arms and waltz the night away. While our next event (an informal potluck dinner dance) will not be quite so romantic, it will be a chance to get ready for the next ball.
