FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everyone is welcome at our events.

At this time there is no fee to join the Vintage Dance Society.

If you come regularly to events we consider you a member.  (If we have your address you would get periodic mailings about upcoming events.)

The cost of events varies. For example- the informal potlucks typically cost $6/person with a potluck contribution, workshops are typically $7/person (though the workshop that is part of the potluck is free), and balls range from $25 to $30 per person.

Formal or period attire is typically required at balls.  Costumes are not required at the potlucks (though some people do dress up in Victorian or Ragtime attire just for fun). Workshop attire is informal.

The dances we do are the social ballroom dances of the Victorian and Ragtime eras.  This includes the waltz, polka, schottische, one-step, tango, and foxtrot, among others.

The potluck generallly starts at 7:00, but people tend to eat first.  Dancing usually starts around 8:00 and the workshop typically starts around 8:30 or 8:45; however, these are informal evenings, so the time the dance and/or the workshop starts and its length may vary. The potlucks typically end around 11:00 p.m. Workshops typically start at 7:30, balls typically start at 8:30.

Typically we get a wide range of dancers at our events- beginners to advanced.  If you have done any social couple dancing (ballroom, swing, international folk, contras, english country, scandanvian, etc.) you should have no trouble with our dances. But we also have people who walk in the door never having done much dancing.  If you come to a workshop or the potluck and have not done much dancing we would try to get you a few minutes with an instructor (or an advanced dancer) to get you started. (Yes, we do have a lesson at the potlucks, but we gear it to the overall crowd.)

Keeney Memorial Hall in Wethersfield, CT is 4 miles south of Hartford, just off of Interstate 91.  (It takes about 2 1/2 hours to drive from NYC or Boston.  There are some good motels and a bed and breakfast in the area.)

If you are coming from the south: Take I-91 north to exit 26 Marsh Street (the sign says exit 25/26).Stay to the right on the exit ramp for exit 26.  (If you get out on exit 25 you will end up crossing a large bridge- getting back is difficult.) At the end of the exit 26 ramp there is a stop sign.  Turn left.  Go approximately 0.5 miles to a stop sign. Turn left.  Go a few hundred feet to a "T" intersection. Turn left.  Follow this road approximately 0.4 miles to a stop sign at a flag pole. Turn left. Keeney Memorial Hall is the third building down on the left.  Parking (and the entrance is in the rear).

If you are coming from the north: Take I-91 south to exit 26 Marsh Street. At the end of the exit 26 ramp there is a stop sign.  Turn right.  Go a few feet to a "T" intersection. Turn left.  Follow this road approximately 0.4 miles to a stop sign at a flag pole. Turn left. Keeney Memorial Hall is the third building down on the left.  Parking (and the entrance is in the rear).
South Congregational Church in Hartford, CT is located at 277 Main Street. Directions to the church are as follows:
From Interstate 91 north or south- take the Capitol Area Exit.  This puts you on another highway.  Take this to the end.  You will be entering a traffic circle.  Go 3/4 around the circle. Turn right on to Hudson Street.  At the second traffic light turn left on to Buckingham Street. Go a few hundred feet and turn right on to John Street.  The church is on your left.  There are church parking lots on your left and on your right.
