Connecticut Manufacturers of Naval Equipment
The U.S. Navy used a system of two to four-letter codes commencing with
"C" to identify its commercial suppliers. The two-letter"Type Number System"
was introduced in 1916. CA-123, for example, designated equipment built by
the American Radio Research Corp., CW- indicating Western Electric-built
gear. CAB-identifies Baldwin Telephone Company, while CZE- was for Zenith
Radio.
The early two-letter C-indicators are mainly from World War One, with
many later reissued, save for large corporate entities such as General
Electric and Western Electric, whose CG- and CW- prefixes continued through-
out World War Two. the two and three-letter codes usually had a mnemonic
connection, such as the New Haven Clock Company's CJ code also standing for
the initials of its founder, Chauncy Jerome, while CSP stood directly for
the Seymour Products Company.
By September, 1943, the wartime proliferation of Navy suppliers required
the introduction of four-letter codes, CAAA- being assigned to the Medco Mfg.
Co. By the war's end, designations had passed the CBAA- mark, and continued
on through the Cold War Era, now titled the MDS (Manufacturer Designating
Symbols Code). The Army and Air Force meanwhile adopted the five-digit FSCM
(Federal Supply Code for Manufacturers), or simply FSC, which co-existed with
the old MDS until the issue of the last C-Code in late 1979 or early 1980.
Thus, CEFR, for Soundcraft Systems of Morrilton, Arkansas, ended a nomen-
clature which had endured for nearly 65 years and four wars....
