AIRCRAFT RADIO CORP. Type 12 ARC Radio Sets
Aircraft Radio Corporation ARC radio sets have sometimes been
confused with Joint Army-Navy ARC- (Aircraft, Radio, Communications)
type equipments. The following may help in sorting out this historical
airborne communications situation....
The Aircraft Radio Corporation, of Boonton, NJ arose in the 1930s as
a supplier of goods and services to the early commercial airlines. Around
1940, it began to manufacture a series of receivers nearly identical with
the SCR-274N Series made by Western Electric Co..
When the AN- Designations appeared c 1943, SCR-274N became AN/ARC-5,
with BC- equipments given R-, T-, C-, MD-, and so on. Thus one may find
both AN/ARC-12 and A.R.C. ARC 12 units. But they are not at all alike;
ARC Type 12 is a set of receivers and transmitters covering .2-1.5 and
118-148 MC, while AN/ARC-12 has a 225-400 MC range.
Type ARC 12 appeared c 1950, for 8 Army helicopters and 3 observation
aircraft.
