Submarines & Naval Science

This page is respectfully dedicated to Capt. John B. Hess, USN (Ret'd). I was honored to work with John during my years at EB. He, as much as anyone, exemplified the tradition of pride, courage and competence of the Silent Service.

This is the NR-1. It is the US Navy's nuclear powered research submersible. Much of the time I spent at EB was devoted to the design and support of hydraulic and high-pressure air systems on this vessel. It was placed in service in 1969 and still serves today. During the Cold War the NR-1's missions and capabilities were classified, but since the demise of the Soviet Union, the vessel has been more widely publicized. It has been used by Dr. Robert Ballard in a number of deep sea search and research programs.
