A Picture Essay - Building Our Brick Oven - April -September 2000
My oven was built using plans found in the book The Bread Builders, by Alan Scott and Dan Wing, and the advice of the great people on the Yahoo!Group: Brick Ovens, most notably Norbert Senf. Other excellent resources include: by Tom Jaine, Building aWood-Fired Oven for Bread and Pizza. He not only gives oven building plans, but also a great history of brick oven use...Kiko Denzer, also part of the Yahoo oven builder group, has written a book
called Build Your Own Earth Oven, which has also been getting rave reviews. There is also The Bread Ovens of Quebec - By Lise
Boily and Jean-Francois Blanchette - more of an anthroplogical study of clay
ovens and oven use in Canada. Two great websites, if you have not already
visited them, are The Brick Oven Page maintained by Norb Senf of the Masonry Heaters Association and Forest's web site at Brick Oven Cooking. There are many others. I am a school librarian whose largest project prior to this was a pine book case - anyone can do this with enough time, patience, neighborly help, a very handy father-in-law and a very supportive wife and family!
