While all of history is important — it is, after all, the slow cumulation
of hundreds of thousands of tiny events, the results of a myriad of human
choices — there are some particular "moments" in history, which
stand out in some way, as unprecedented, earth-shattering, and future-altering.
These are moments which altered the way people saw themselves and others, which
changed whole societies, and turned the tides of entire civilizations.
In this series of essays, I address what I consider to be the
greatest moments in history — events which had a vast and long-lasting
impact. In each essay I explain what led up to it, & explain why it is so
significant. Since western civilization is my forté, I address only those
watershed moments in western history. So, please pardon me for leaving out such
moments in Oriental, Pre-Columbian American, or Sub-Sahara African history.
