October 2000 Rides

October 28: Century ride with the Gimbel's group. Met up with Dana in Scott's Corner, he showed me some good backroads behind 22 which avoid some of the hills. I've ridden with him before, he does the first loop through Armonk then heads back. It was very warm out this morning, I didn't even need leg warmers. Got in the Gimbel's group and went long. Stayed with them. That hill after Armonk always kills me. It is going to take a bit getting used to these guys again, they are so twitchy and always jockeying for position. There are no long pulls. On the flats to the first sprint, there were three guys (Max, Charlie, and some Spin Gym guy) in the front. I stopped at a stop light and was dropped. I rode the rest of the way back alone. Did not bring enough food. It was very windy today. Got the 105 miles in under 6 hours.

October 22: Rode up to Ridgefield then down along the Saugatuck resevoir. The trees are very pretty although they are getting bare in spots - not too much green anywhere! Saw several dead deer. Not too crowded out. The weather was a little nippy. Fall is definitely here. Winter won't be too far behind - yeech.

October 21: Rode with some friends down in New York. We did the 200K route from April. We started out with Diane, Pat, and Rob. It was pretty chilly riding up into New Jersey. I brought two pair of arm warmers instead of a pair of arm and leg warmers. After a while it warmed up. We went up Skyline Drive. It is only aout two miles of climbing. Not too bad. Then we were up into New York along Seven Lakes Drive. Very beautiful scenery - with my yellow tinted glasses the yellow leaves look like they are on fire. Then on up to West Point via the back way on (nasty) Mine Road. It was very peaceful back there. The Army Navy game was going on and there were lots of visitors. The West Point campus is very scenic. We stopped for lunch right outside the gate. Some motorcyclists were also eating lunch and were impressed we had ridden up from Manhattan (they had riden up from Northern NJ). We then went down (busy) 9W. While going through Nyack we saw Greg out on an afternoon ride. I chased him down and he rode back with us to Tenafly. We got back as the sun was setting. Not exactly a blistering pace, but fun nonetheless. Check out another write up here

October 7: Rode up along the Bloomin' Metric route up in Easton. The trees were wonderfully orange, red, and brown. There were occasional clouds floating across the sun. It is really turning into fall - I missed most of it. Kind of felt flat on the bike, but still strong. Need some other riders to get me going.

October 1-4: Pactour Central Transcontinental

Total mileage for month - 860.4 miles
